Franz Brentano’s Conception of the Object and its Intentional Inexistence

Abstract In line with earlier works, this article argues for a “continuist” interpretation of Brentano’s conception intentionality. It maintains that intentionality rests on complex set notions, which are reduced to minimal core or applied more fully depending the complexity mental phenomenon under consideration and perspective from it is analyzed. The positions conceptual structure in relation theories objects developed within framework late- Neo-Scholastic philosophy where, since psychic act can relate its object different ways, types roles must be distinguished. This theory enables Brentano reinterpret Aristoteles’s idea phenomena light commentaries interpretations Thomas Aquinas while also giving space other medieval texts.
